Grand Final - One Day Game 25th of March, 2017

The boys arrived to the ground on grand final day for a 30 over per side game against Whitfords due to the first week being rained out. Leon and Pete were feeling pretty confident after a great training session on Thursday night with all the boys up for the challenge ahead.

Griff Julian asked Pete what to do at the toss, and he was given clear instructions to LOSE the toss (but if it goes against us, Bat). Always being a captain to follow instruction, Griff lost the toss and Whitfords decided to have a bat on what were slippy conditions.

Jye Riccardi, our number one strike bowler opened and with the first ball of the innings got the outside edge with James Quinn-Schofield taking the catch in the gully. 1 for 0 and the boys were up and about. The score then moved to 12 when Nic Harrold bowled a good ball to their number 3 who chipped it to midwicket with Jye taking an overhead mark of a catch to have them 2 for 12.

James Quinn-Scofield bowling with great pace smashed back the stumps in the very next over to see Whitfords drop to 3 for 13.

This then brought their captain to the crease and the wicket the boys needed. Throwing caution into the wind, he decided to try and lift the run rate and hit a ball in the air towards mid-off. Jayden Green threw himself to the left, knocking the ball down with his left hand, jumping back to his feet to then throw the ball at the wicketkeepers end for a direct hit and wonderful, team lifting run out. Whitfords were in early trouble at 4 for 19.

Continuing to try and get every run possible, Whitfords took off for a quick single and Jye Riccardi flew in from cover and with the flick of his wrist had another direct hit and run out….Whitfords were 5 for 20.

It was then time for Griff Julian and Harry O’Brien to come on and as per the semi-final, we were looking for them to make further in roads. Before we knew it, Griff had knocked the batsman’s stumps back and Whitfords were in big trouble at 6 for 31.

Still, Whitfords have been the best batting line up all year and while all these wickets had been falling, their captain and best batsman was still there. Then out of nowhere, after bowling 2 wrong un’s to the left hander around the wicket, Harry got a big leggy to turn and knock back the middle stump! The captain was gone and Whitford’s were in real trouble at 7 for 31.

After doing a fine job wicket keeping it was time for Regan Spear to bowl his off spin and Riley Bonolo to take the gloves. Whitford’s were still fighting hard to lift the score and had got to 46 when Regan bowled a nice flighted off spinner with the batsman chipping towards mid-wicket with Nic Harrold taking a fine catch. The scores were 8 for 46.

Whitford’s trying to get as many runs as possible, again tried to take to Regan with the batsman getting the top edge and Riley taking an easy catch with the gloves. Scores 9 for 46.

It was time to bring back Jye to clean it up and within 3 balls that is what he did. Bowled and Whitford’s all out for 55 in the 26th over.

It was the best bowling and fielding performance of the year with every boy doing a great job and contributing to the result.

While it was only 56 required the boys knew the job wasn’t done. Griff and James went out as planned to open the batting. The instructions were clear that we needed to take our time and not lose early wickets that would have given them hope of a comeback. And that is what the boys did. When Griff retired he was 6 not out but had done what the team required and had not lost a wicket. The score was 0 for 15 from 7 overs.

Harry and James then came together and it didn’t take long for Harry to take the game on and smack one over the top towards cow corner with one bounce and over the boundary for 4. In the 6 overs they faced the score had jumped to an equalling score of 55 with James retiring on 20 from 27 balls. Harry tried to play an inventive shot trying to hit the winning runs and got caught but the damage was done with him making a fine 23 from 22 balls. It was then left to Jye to hit the winning runs and then the celebrations begun.

Well done to all the boys, Griff, Harry. Riley, James, Jye, Regan, Jack, Jayden, Thomas, Nic, Chris and Ambrose….PREMIERS 2016/7!!!

We are all so proud of you!
